Jul 02, 2017  Chess is chess, right? You can’t improve upon the game or change it, so what can you do with a new chess title? Well, it turns out that Ripstone has the answer, with Chess Ultra. No, it doesn’t do.

'Chess Master' as in the old Chessmaster series by Software Toolworks/Ubisoft?In that case, I think Chessmaster is still a more complete package. The learning section is massive, with extensive and good quality tutorials, the engine is good and very customizable, to create your own AI 'personalities' (and there are many already), there's a database section that, while not on par with Chessbase/Scid etc. Is serviceable enough, and the analysis tools are nice.On the other hand, multiplayer is dead (and was not that well implemented in the first place) and they are not so easy to come. I think CM 9000 was briefly on GOG but then had to be retired from the store, so as far as I know there's no digital edition available anywere, even of the latest CM XI, and you have to find a boxed copy. I'm not sure what engine Chess Ultra uses but its grandmaster only has an ELO of 1720 or so.

That being said, I would think that Chessmaster is a more powerful and complete chess program than Chess Ultra. However, in terms of eye-candy, Chess Ultra wins. To clear up some confusion about the Grandmaster ELO, each AI level has a set difficulty rating, so Grandmaster will play at the same level every time (around 2400/2500). BUT, Grandmaster's ELO will change depending on how the community is performing against that specific level.

Monsters of Little Haven At the heart of the action are a twelve-year-old Kenneth and his younger sister Esme, children of the Murphy family, who hit the trail of a mysterious monster following series of entangled events. Little Monsters is an absolutely deranged movie, in the best possible sense of the word. Graphically violent and extremely funny, where its greatest merit lies is in its heart - rarely have I seen a film so sentimental that avoids becoming turgid, with Forsythe sidestepping the pitfall of overwhelming everything with jaded syrupy nonsense. Whispers steam. So if more players are losing to Grandmaster than winning, the ELO will increase. This explains why the rating for Grandmaster could show temporarily lower than Expert for example. Hope tbis explains it! We're currently exploring options to make this clearer in game. Or to put it another way, if I were to play against the grandmaster today, I'd have a better chance at winning than I would if I were to play against it a month or a year from now? The way the AI plays is the same. It's no different from how ELO for real players can behave - could go up or down regardless of whether player skill has changed. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated as always.ps. I'm not a he haha, Hollie here:) No way for you to have known that, but thought I would share.
